Argali Hunting in Mongolia

Three argali subspecies, three very different mountains.

Argali is the largest wild sheep on earth, and Mongolia holds three distinct subspecies across three very different landscapes: Altai argali in the high western mountains, Gobi argali among the desert canyons of the south, and Hangai argali in the gentler forest-steppe of central Mongolia.

Nomad Trophy is an independent advisory, not an outfitter. We match you to the right concession and outfitter for the subspecies and season you want, review the quota position before you commit, and manage permits and export from enquiry to delivery. Each subspecies has its own page with terrain, season and what is included in the hunt.

Altai ArgaliWestern high mountains, largest horns, strictest quota
Gobi ArgaliSouth Gobi canyons and desert mountains, tightly curled horns
Hangai ArgaliCentral forest-steppe, heavy bases, easier terrain

All three argali hunts follow the same basic pattern — long-distance glassing to locate mature rams, then a careful approach that can run from a few hundred metres to well over a kilometre of stalking, depending on terrain.

What differs between the three is the ground you cover to get there: high-altitude scree in the Altai, broken desert terrain in the Gobi, or rolling forest-steppe in the Hangai.
