Ulaanbaatar City Tour and the Chinggis Khaan Museum

Mongolia’s capital in one private day, with the story of Chinggis Khaan at its centre.

Most journeys through Mongolia begin in Ulaanbaatar, and a single well-planned day here explains much of what you will see later in the countryside. This private city tour is built around the Chinggis Khaan National Museum, where the history of the Mongol Empire is laid out from its nomadic roots to the largest contiguous land empire the world has known.

Around the museum, your personal guide takes you through the parts of the city that matter: the central square, the monasteries that survived the twentieth century, and the markets where everyday Ulaanbaatar does its shopping. The pace is yours — longer in the museum if history is your interest, more time in the streets if you would rather watch the city move.

It works best on your first or last day in Mongolia, when you are in the capital anyway and want the time to count.

Your guide meets you at your hotel and the day starts at the Chinggis Khaan National Museum, before the larger groups arrive. The galleries move from the steppe cultures that came before the Empire, through Chinggis Khaan’s rise and conquests, to the khanates that followed — with your guide filling in the stories that the labels leave out.

After lunch at a local restaurant, the afternoon covers the city itself: Sükhbaatar Square, a working Buddhist monastery and, if you want it, a market or a shop for cashmere and felt made in Mongolia.

The day ends back at your hotel, or with dinner and a performance of traditional music and throat singing if you would like to see one.
