A waterfall in a lava gorge at the heart of the Orkhon Valley, in Övörkhangai Province.
Ulaan Tsutgalan, the Red Waterfall, is where the Ulaan River drops over a wall of ancient lava into a gorge carved through the Orkhon Valley. It is Mongolia’s best-known waterfall, set in a UNESCO-listed landscape of volcanic rock, river meadows and nomadic summer pastures.
The valley around it is part of Övörkhangai Province — our home region, where we know the families, the camps and the tracks personally. That makes the waterfall an easy addition to a Nomad Living stay, a horseback route or a visit to Karakorum, rather than a long detour of its own.
Your personal guide times the visit for the best light and the fewest people, and can take you down into the gorge for a view of the falls from below.
