Hunting in Bayan-Ulgii

Mongolia’s highest peaks and its Kazakh eagle-hunting culture, in the far west.

Bayan-Ulgii sits at the far western edge of Mongolia, home to the highest peaks of the Altai range and to the country’s Kazakh minority, known internationally for hunting with golden eagles. For rifle hunters, the region is prized for Siberian ibex on some of the steepest ground in the country.

The altitude and isolation here mean fewer hunters and lower pressure on the animals than in more accessible ranges, but also longer, harder days for anyone chasing a trophy.

Hunts here follow the same pattern as elsewhere in the Altai — 4×4 as far as the terrain allows, then horses and finally a stalk on foot — but the ground is generally steeper and the camps more remote than in Altai proper.

Many travellers combine an ibex hunt here with a visit to a Kazakh eagle hunter’s family, arranged as an optional cultural add-on rather than part of the hunt itself.

Highlights

The highest peaks of the Altai. Kazakh eagle-hunting communities, and genuinely low hunting pressure on Siberian ibex.

Good to Know

The most remote of our western regions — expect a long overland transfer and some of the steepest terrain we hunt.

Nearby

Pairs well with Altai for a broader ibex itinerary; an eagle hunter family visit can be arranged as a cultural add-on.
