Turtle Rock and Gorkhi-Terelj National Park

A granite turtle in a valley of larch and meadow, the easiest taste of Mongolian wilderness from the capital.

Turtle Rock — Melkhii Khad — is a granite outcrop in Gorkhi-Terelj National Park that weather and time have shaped into the unmistakable form of a giant turtle. It is the best-known landmark in a park full of strange rock formations, river meadows and forested slopes, all within reach of Ulaanbaatar.

For travellers with limited time, Terelj is the quickest way to leave the city behind and see the kind of landscape Mongolia is known for. For those at the start of a longer trip, it is a gentle first day out before heading deeper into the country.

Your personal guide plans the day around what you enjoy: a walk up to the Aryabal meditation temple, an hour on horseback through the valley, or simply time by the river.

DurationOne day, or overnight in a ger camp
LocationGorkhi-Terelj National Park
HighlightsTurtle Rock, Aryabal temple, river valleys
FormatPrivate, with your personal guide and driver
SeasonYear-round; greenest June–September
DifficultyEasy to moderate — optional uphill walk

The road into Terelj follows the Tuul River out of the city and into granite country, where the valley opens up and the first ger camps appear among the larch trees.

Turtle Rock is the first stop, with time to walk around and climb the lower slopes. From there, a path leads up to the Aryabal meditation temple, with views across the whole valley — worth the effort for anyone happy with a steady uphill walk.

Lunch is at a ger camp or with a local family, and the afternoon is yours: riding, a river walk, or the drive back to Ulaanbaatar. Staying overnight in Terelj turns the day into a quiet introduction to life in a ger.
