Ulaan Tsutgalan Waterfall and the Orkhon Valley

A waterfall in a lava gorge at the heart of the Orkhon Valley, in Övörkhangai Province.

Ulaan Tsutgalan, the Red Waterfall, is where the Ulaan River drops over a wall of ancient lava into a gorge carved through the Orkhon Valley. It is Mongolia’s best-known waterfall, set in a UNESCO-listed landscape of volcanic rock, river meadows and nomadic summer pastures.

The valley around it is part of Övörkhangai Province — our home region, where we know the families, the camps and the tracks personally. That makes the waterfall an easy addition to a Nomad Living stay, a horseback route or a visit to Karakorum, rather than a long detour of its own.

Your personal guide times the visit for the best light and the fewest people, and can take you down into the gorge for a view of the falls from below.

DurationUsually 2 days or more as part of an Orkhon Valley itinerary
LocationOrkhon Valley, Övörkhangai Province
HighlightsWaterfall, lava gorge, UNESCO cultural landscape
FormatPrivate, with your personal guide and driver
SeasonBest June–September, when the river is full
DifficultyEasy to moderate — rocky path into the gorge

The Orkhon Valley is a long day’s drive west of Ulaanbaatar, so the waterfall is almost always visited as part of a wider journey through central Mongolia — often after Karakorum and before or after a stay with a nomadic family.

At the falls, you walk along the rim of the gorge for the classic view, then take the path down to the river below if you want to feel the spray. Yak herds and the gers of summer camps are usually scattered across the surrounding meadows.

Nights are spent at a ger camp in the valley or with a local family, which leaves time for an evening walk along the river and an early morning visit when the falls are at their quietest.
