A voluntary cultural experience, arranged with respect for local traditions.
Long before Buddhism reached the steppe, Mongolians looked to shamans to keep the balance between people, nature and the spirits of the land — the Eternal Blue Sky above and the mountains, rivers and ancestors below. That tradition survived centuries of change and is still part of daily life for many families today.
This visit is a meeting with a local shaman we know personally, not a performance staged for tourists. With your personal guide translating, you learn how shamans are chosen, what their role is in a community, and what the drum, costume and ovoo stone cairns mean.
Where the shaman agrees, you may be invited to observe a ritual. Nothing is required of you, and participation is always your own choice.
